Self-esteem is a really tricky thing, especially for women and girls. Society doesn’t seem to be able to make up its mind. Magazines scream of store shelves about containing ways to make you more confident! More assertive! And yet right next to those magazines you’ll have ones decrying the “narcissism of the selfie generation!” It seems that a woman is supposed to be confident without being too confident. Well, the first thing to learn is that you should never, ever, worry about being too confident. If you’re happy with who you are, then you should never feel like you have to apologize for it. Of course, the struggle for many women is trying to convince themselves that they have any worth at all. Thanks to the media that surrounds us every day, plenty of girls are growing up unable to live up to the unrealistic expectations that are being set for them, leading them to feel like there’s something wrong with them. There are plenty of different ways to help increase your self-esteem levels, but here are just a few that you might want to try.

Stop apologising

Women seem encouraged to apologize for pretty much everything throughout their day. Are you taking your time doing something? “Sorry!” Did someone bump into you and then ignore you? “Sorry!” Women feel the need to apologize for their very existence a lot of the time. The problem is that this lets the world know that they can treat you however they want without any concern for your wellbeing. By refusing to apologize and calling people out when they do something to you, you can let the world know that they can walk all over you.

Change things you want to change

If there are things that you don’t like about yourself, you might well be in a position to change those things. Perhaps you don’t like your hair or your clothes? That’s a simple fix. If it’s something about your body, then that’s more complicated. It might come down to diet and exercise, or you might feel like a more drastic approach is better. If that’s the case, then you need to speak to someone qualified like Dr. David Halpern. You more can find out more about Dr. Halpern here. If you are thinking about something like this, then please make sure that it is your decision and yours alone. There’s nothing wrong with feeling uncomfortable with something like surgery, and you should never feel pressured into something so serious.

Take a good look at yourself

Of course, sometimes you don’t need to change yourself, just your perspective. A lot of the time many women and girls are given a pretty warped view of their own bodies thanks to images in the media and the way that they’re taught to see themselves by people throughout their lives. One of the very best things that you can do is to just take a good hard look at yourself and come to terms with your body. You’ll see that it’s not as terrible as you might imagine. The little imperfections on it are what make you unique, they tell the story of your life, and each part of it is another piece of the puzzle that makes you who you are.
